Preparations Underway for Annual Convention Amidst Attending to Current Issues

by Meghan Brown

While many of you are haying and working away on summer projects the staff at Nevada Cattlemen’s association is looking towards our annual convention in November. This year our convention will be held in Elko. The dates for this year’s 75th annual convention are November 10-12. We are excited to be back in Elko this year to enjoy the great Basque restaurants, local businesses, and Ruby Mountains.

We are currently working on reserving speakers, and panels for the different meetings. Please contact the office with any ideas, topics, or individuals that you would like to see during convention. This is a time for members to gather to set policy, learn about new methods and marketing techniques, and to socialize. We are working to make this year bigger and better than it has been in the past. However, we cannot do that without your participation and input.

This year we hope to provide an outstanding Trade Show. The Trade Show will be located in the main lobby of the Elko Convention Center. This easy and convenient location will allow you to visit vendors during meeting breaks and after lunch. To become a vendor at the trade show please contact the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association office at 1-775-738-9214. Currently we have Pinenut Livestock Supply, Stockmans Supply, Nevada Department of Agriculture Division of Animal Industry, Snowbound Books, J.M. Capriola Co., American AgCredit, and Nevada State Bank as venders. We look forward to adding your business to the list of the vendors for the 75th Annual Nevada Cattlemen’s Association Convention. Please join us this fall to visit with these venders and more.

Not only are businesses attending the trade show many are supporting the association by sponsoring events. We would like to thank Resource Concepts, Utah Wool Marketing, McMullen McPhee, Westway Feed Products, Nevada State Bank, Pinenut Livestock Supply, and Snowbound Books for their generous sponsorship to our convention.

Without strong support from our allied members and our producer members our convention would not be possible. We appreciate our members and our supporters. This association is making a difference, and we look forward to the tradition living on.

Although the association has been working on convention, the current issues have not escaped our view or attention. The association has been working hard. Here are a few things the association has been working on:

  • Ron Torell represented NCA at the Nevada Section for Society for Range Management summer meeting.
  • Annalyn Settelmeyer and Ron Torell represented NCA at cooperative strategy sessions to formulate a plan for upcoming HSUS proposed legislation.
  • Ron Torell continued to work on NCA’s 2011 fund raising efforts.
  • Meghan Brown represented NCA at the Governor’s Sage Grouse Conservation Team meeting.
  • Ron Cerri, JJ Goicoechea and Meghan Brown met with USFS Supervisor Jeanne Higgins. Jeanne is new to the position and this was an opportunity to introduce ourselves and speak with her about issues important to our industry.
  • JJ Goicoechea, Boyd Spratling, and Meghan Brown participated in a BLM meeting regarding the use of motorized equipment for wild horse gathers. The members of the NCA staff and Board spoke in support of using helicopters for gather and census purposes.
  • NCA staff continues to work on convention and bull sale coordination.
  • Ron Cerri represented NCA at the Public Lands Committee Interim meeting in Ely on wild horse issues, and the WWP/El Paso situation regarding the funds given to WWP for grazing buyouts.
  • NCA volunteer leadership and staff are continually monitoring issues such as wild horse gathers, litigation by radical environmental groups, coordination with other associations and interest groups to send collective messages of support and opposition to issues important to our industry.
  • Ron Torell continues to represent NCA on the Hope on the Range educational effort.
